Insulate and aerate the microbes

Compost microbes require both oxygen and warmth to prosper, but balancing the needs of both can be tricky. For example, the use of air holes or slots as vents can be problematic for composting. Warm air rises naturally and is lost quickly if vents are at, or near the top of a compost system. Insulating such a draughty system is pointless - it would be like an insulated room with the windows open!

Put gravity to work

Composting wastes shrink in size and descend, creating room to put in more fresh wastes. With regular waste inputs at the top of the unit, a gradual flow of composting matter is created by the pull of gravity. Bioverter uses this gravity powered flow to make full use of its compact insulated space. It can compost the wastes of a household of 1 to 4 adults.

You can’t relate how well a compost equipment performs to its size. For example, a tumbler shouldn’t be completely filled to allow room for tumbling, so the space isn’t fully utilised. In fact, the fuller a compost bin, the harder is it to aerate the wastes.
