A simple way to collect wastes for composting
Posted on 2/8/2022
A quick organisation of wastes helps you to compost well. For example, place your kitchen scraps under a layer of dissimilar household wastes.
In our prototyping trials, we found a simple way to collect wastes for optimal composting. It also makes feeding Bioverter more convenient.
Gather different wastes in a kitchen caddy or lidded container as follows:
- Line the container with non-glossy paper (e.g. newspaper) to make it easier to empty contents.
- Fill the bottom third of the container with paper + garden wastes; e.g. paper towels, shredded documents, toilet rolls, torn egg cartons, ripped cardboard, green foliage.
- Start adding kitchen wastes; e.g. scraps from meal preparation, crushed egg shells, stale bread, limp vegetables, bruised fruits, wilting flowers, coffee grounds, crumbs.
When emptying the container into Bioverter, the paper and garden wastes will become a layer covering the kitchen scraps. Spread the wastes or add more garden/paper wastes to fill the corners.
This method also naturally helps you to sort your wastes in a way that makes for better composting. For more information check out how to sort your wastes!
